RE²source - Bioeconomy strategy for the Karlsruhe TechnologyRegion

With the "RE²source" bioeconomy strategy for the Karlsruhe TechnologyRegion, we are taking a decisive step towards a sustainable bioeconomy.
The aim of the project is to develop a strategy and roadmap to drive forward the raw materials revolution - the transition to a bio-based circular economy.

Presentation of the bioeconomy strategy

On April 22, the draft of the bioeconomy strategy for the Karlsruhe TechnologyRegion was presented. More than 90 stakeholders took the opportunity for the exchange of expertise and discussed the analyses and measures presented. In addition, regional examples were presented of how bioeconomy can be used in the TRK is successfully implemented and further developed. Click here for a review of the event.

Project overview

The aim of the strategy is to develop joint objectives and measures to exploit the potential of the bioeconomy to promote the location and sustainable transformation of the economy in the TRK .

The objectives of the strategy development (in line with the "State Strategy for a Sustainable Bioeconomy in Baden-Württemberg") are the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the conservation of natural resources and the promotion of sustainable, circular value creation processes in the region.

In addition to promoting the use of renewable raw materials for products, high-quality energy and material recycling of biogenic by-products and residual flows plays an important role in reducing the use of fossil raw materials and promoting regional value creation. Biotechnical and chemical processes are used to create resource-efficient cycles that allow organic resources to be reused to the highest possible quality.

Under the leadership of TechnologieRegion Karlsruhe GmbH, trends and potentials of the bioeconomy in the region were identified in a participatory process with workshops and interviews together with representatives of local authorities, business and science as well as civil society actors.

Based on the results, the need for action and measures to initiate a dynamic transformation process will be jointly developed. In particular, possibilities for increasing emissions reduction and resource recovery in the target area as well as opportunities and measures for promoting the location using the potential of the bioeconomy will be examined.

The strategy development process is scientifically supported and moderated by the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI and the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB.

Project partners are:

An interim conclusion can be drawn:

  • The bioeconomization process is an important and sensible building block for prosperous, sustainable regional development.
  • There is relevant economic potential for bioeconomic value creation in the key regional industries and municipalities.
  • As a knowledge- and technology-intensive trend, the bioeconomy is a good fit for the Karlsruhe TechnologyRegion.

Of course, a strategy and roadmap alone are not enough. That is why we are already actively implementing various projects and supporting other stakeholders in the region with collaboration and project planning.
If you are looking for partners, would like to implement a project yourself or have information on a specific aspect, we are always happy to help.

The project to develop a "Bioeconomy Strategy for the Karlsruhe TechnologyRegion - RE²source" will run from February 2023 to August 2024. The project is funded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection and the Energy Sector, with funds approved by the Baden-Württemberg state parliament.
