IMMO TALK 2023 - Bioeconomy in construction

Bio-based raw materials instead of concrete, steel and plastic. Tackling the construction industry of tomorrow today. The motto of IMMO TALK 2023 was "Bioeconomy in construction".

On this page:

The focus of the construction industry is on sustainability

Under the title "Bioeconomy in construction - renewable raw materials in the life cycle of buildings", more than 90 representatives from business, science and politics came together at the new weisenburger headquarters in Karlsruhe on May 25, 2023 to discuss future-oriented construction with bio-based raw materials.

Against the backdrop of the massive reduction in emissions required in the construction industry in just a few years and the establishment of a circular economy for building materials, renewable raw materials are an important lever for reducing grey energy. The decision-makers at TRK are aware of this necessity.

"The raw materials transition is an essential part of the transformation process towards a sustainable construction industry," summarizes Jochen Ehlgötz, Managing Director of TechnologieRegion Karlsruhe GmbH. "We must now act with foresight in order to bring technologies and products to market maturity and take advantage of the market dynamics in the coming years."

New building with plant fibers

In addition to the well-known timber construction, many other regional plants such as flax, willow, hemp or mushroom mycelium are suitable for use in various trades. New construction methods also play an essential role in industrializing the processing of traditional materials and giving them a future perspective that goes beyond traditional insulation with biofibres.

Illustrative examples and future prospects in this area are being developed at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, among others, and are currently being presented in various demonstrator projects such as "RoofKIT" or "REGrow Willow" and "ReGrow Flax".

Research and development in the field of bioeconomy is one of the core competencies of TRK: Find out more about the bioeconomy strategy and initiate projects.
