Whether you are interested in sports, culture or culinary delights - the Karlsruhe TechnologyRegion (TRK) offers you a wide range of leisure activities. In this section you will find information and tips on how to organize your leisure time and various ways to make friends in your new home.
Club culture
The distinctive club culture in Germany could probably be described as "typically German". Associations are organizations of people with common goals or interests. The topics for which associations and societies (also known as clubs) are founded can be very different. There are, for example

Many people are members of an association, including many children and young people. They take on a voluntary role in the association, i.e. voluntarily and without payment.
As a member of an association, you can take advantage of all the services offered by the association. At the same time, you will get to know many people with similar interests. If you are looking for contact with people in your area, a meaningful leisure activity, fun and a community that shares the same interests as you, then membership of a club is an excellent and inexpensive way to do this.

Adult education centers
Adult education centers (VHS) are non-profit institutions for youth and adult education and are an integral part of social life in Germany. Contrary to their name, adult education centers are not universities, but are generally only attended after graduating from school in order to continue one's education or learn something new.
With their wide range of educational opportunities, adult education centers are open to all population groups and age groups. In this way, they make an important contribution to individual personal development and social interaction in society.
In addition, the work of the adult education centers is characterized by ideological and party-political independence, offers close to home and cost-effective pricing.
The program areas of the VHS cover topics from:

The program is geared towards the orientation, education and qualification interests of the participants. The aim is to promote the development of individual potential, further vocational training and qualification adjustments and to contribute to social integration.
With courses in literacy, basic education and catching up on school-leaving qualifications, adult education centers also offer educationally disadvantaged target groups a second chance. Since the "Immigration Act" came into force, the adult education centers have been working nationwide as providers of integration courses. Certificates play a role above all in foreign languages (e.g. telc language certificates) and in vocational training (e.g. Xpert certificates) and can help with the recognition of certificates.
Welcoming culture at the VHS Karlsruhe
Since 2011, the vhs Karlsruhe has been running various projects to get immigrants from other countries in particular interested in the history and culture of the city and the country and to awaken their desire for more participation.
This is achieved in the Culture and Integration program area with the values of respect and appreciation.
The participants contribute their skills and strengths. They relate their own experiences to those of other international citizens and to the participants from Karlsruhe. This creates a lively intercultural exchange.
The vhs Karlsruhe offers specialist German courses for nursing staff in the care of the elderly and sick as well as doctors from abroad.

Outdoor activities in the region
Do you prefer to go on excursions at the weekend? Alone or with the family? By bike or on foot? Then TRK offers you an ideal starting point for extensive cycling or hiking tours with a large number of cycling and hiking trails.
The international Rhine Cycle Route runs for 1,230 km through four countries from the source of the Rhine in the Swiss Alps to the estuary near Rotterdam. In Baden-Württemberg, the route runs from Constance on the shores of Lake Constance through the Upper Rhine Graben to Mannheim in the Electoral Palatinate. In the east, the route is framed by the Black Forest, Kraichgau and Odenwald, in the west by the Vosges, the Palatinate Forest and the Rhine-Hessian hills. The conditions are ideal for cycling. The terrain is flat and the climate is Mediterranean. Family excursions on the sections are just as possible as sporty long-distance rides. In addition, there are connections to numerous regional cycle paths and thus the opportunity to discover the respective "hinterland".
Would you prefer to spend your free time in the mountains? The Black Forest offers you a wide range of outdoor activities in both summer and winter. If you enjoy hiking, you can find out about various hiking routes in the region on the Wanderinstitut website.
You will also find many hiking routes in the nearby Southern Palatinate.
Over a length of 1230 km, the Rhine flows through four countries: Switzerland, France, Germany and the Netherlands. EuroVelo Route 15 constantly accompanies the river, from its source near Andermatt in the Swiss Alps to its mouth in the North Sea near Hoek van Holland.
