Learn German before entering the country

Depending on your level of knowledge, it is best to start learning German before you enter the country. The Goethe Institutes, for example, offer high-quality German courses worldwide. There are numerous free language learning offers on the Internet, for example from Deutsche Welle. You will probably learn the most in Germany itself. Here you will have plenty of practice and be surrounded by the language in everyday life.

Learning German in the TRK

There are numerous language schools in the Karlsruhe TechnologyRegion that offer German courses at all levels and with various specializations. Very affordable courses are available at adult education centers throughout the region.

To make it easier for you to find a suitable language school, take a look at the list of language course providers at TRK that we have compiled for you at the bottom of this page.

There are also many other ways to improve your German. A great way to practise in Germany in contact with native speakers is to take advantage of offers such as language cafés or tandem partners.

Tip!

Look at your university or student union for notices or internet advertisements for reciprocal language exchanges where you can share your language skills with tandem partners and learn German in return.

Integration courses

If you come from abroad, you have the opportunity to integrate linguistically and culturally in Germany through a subsidized integration course. The course ends with an examination corresponding to level B1. It consists of a 600-hour language course and a 60-hour orientation course on German legal, cultural and historical knowledge. With six levels and a fee of 2.29 euros per hour, the course is very affordable.

As a citizen of the European Union interested in an integration course to improve your German language skills, you have the opportunity to apply for participation at the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF). Please note that your participation depends on the availability of free course places, as EU citizens are not legally entitled to a place on these courses.

Is an integration course compulsory?

Integration courses are compulsory for certain groups of people. This applies to you if you:

  • receive benefits under the Second Book of the German Social Code (e.g. unemployment benefit II) and participation is provided for in an integration agreement or
  • are in particular need of integration and the foreigners authority has asked you to participate.

Immigrants are exempt from the obligation to participate:

  • who are undergoing vocational or other training in Germany,
  • who can provide evidence of participation in comparable educational programs in Germany,
  • whose participation is permanently impossible or unreasonable or
  • who already have a long-term residence permit from another EU Member State and have participated in integration measures there.

There is also no entitlement to participation in the following cases:

  • for children, adolescents and young adults who are starting school or continuing their schooling in Germany,
  • where there is a recognizably low need for integration or
  • if sufficient knowledge of the German language is available.

Registration and participation in integration courses

The responsible immigration authority will inform you whether you are entitled or obliged to take part in an integration course and will issue you with an official confirmation. With this confirmation, you can register for an integration course with a recognized course provider of your choice. You can also use this opportunity to apply for an exemption from the course fees.

There is a dense network of private and state providers offering integration courses at TRK . The website of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) offers you the opportunity to easily and conveniently find a course in your area.
